The canal system was originally built in 1959. By 2001, the entrance had become blocked due to natural sand displacement over the years. The residents of the community collected money to open the blockage by contracting to remove approximately 74 cubic yards of sand from that portion of the canal measuring 256 feet in length and 24 feet in width. The cost of the project was $800. Based on FDEP records and long-time residents’ memories, we do not believe there had been any prior dredging.

The hurricanes of 2004 caused sand to be washed into the entrance, again blocking the three canals’ access to the lake. In 2005, Highlands County obtained a grant to repair the damage caused the previous year. The grant was approved to remove 222 cubic yards of sand.

By 2006, the entrance was again blocked by sand. In 2007, the residents collected money again to remove another 222 cubic yards of sand at a cost of $3,000. In a few months, the entrance was blocked yet again and has remained blocked, leading to the conclusion that the efforts of 2005 and 2007 were not sufficiently extensive to fix the problem. Measurements of the entry portion of the canal system indicate that an additional average depth of three feet should be dredged to restore the entrance to its original condition.

In 2010, FEPCLLJ requested assistance from the Highlands County Tourist Tax Lake Funds in the form of a grant to help us achieve these objectives by supplementing our efforts to restore the entrance of the canals to Little Lake Jackson.

In order to complete the permanent restoration of the Little Lake Jackson beachfront and the canal system entryway, it was calculated that the removal of an additional 682 cubic yards of sand would be required, at a cost of $11,000. The total cost of beachfront and entryway restoration would be $14,000, which includes the previous $3,000 contributed by Erin Park residents. FDEP authorization was obtained, a local contractor was selected and the project was funded by the Highlands County Tourist Development Council on March 27, 2012.

You'll note upon the project completion the water level remains low. Florida had been experiencing a drought from approximately 2006 through 2012. Since the lakes are rain fed, the levels remained at this low level until 2013. By 2014, the rains were sufficient to fill the lakes to capacity with water once again flowing over the spillway on Tubbs road.
