In addition to the canal opening, the hurricanes had washed sand into the passageway under the US Route 27 bridges. During the drought the low water levels rendered the passage beneath the bridge unnavigable for nearly all but the smallest of vessels.

The FEPCLLJ Board decided to pursue funding for the dredging of the channel beneath the US 27 bridge that connected Little and Big Lake Jackson. After researching the needs for this project, meetings began to be held with the necessary state agencies that would be involved in such an undertaking. Also, local businessmen and politicians also took interest and the process began to move forward. Alan Jay Wildstein and Commissioner Don Elwell were instrumental in getting Congressman Tom Rooney to come to Sebring and discuss the concerns the community had with the “channel under the bridge” on Tuesday October 16, 2012. Representatives of the FEPCLLJ attended this meeting and were invited along on the tour. It was a productive meeting and helped pave the way to future meetings with FEPCLLJ and the parties to be involved.

The meeting was being held at the request of the FEPCLLJ. This meeting established the needs for the project and helped pave the way for approval. It was a long and bumpy road but the project was finally approved and it was determined that the FL DOT would be the governmental agency to lead the project.

1. Project is scheduled to be Let for bidding on 04/16/2015
2. The project plans are in the Final review phase and are anticipated to be completed in late January.
3. Once the project has been let for bidding, the process takes approximately 30 days to be awarded to the Contractor, an additional 20 days to execute the contract and an additional 30 days to Issue the Notice to Proceed to allow the Contractor to go to work. This is just a projected timeline only.
4. With the projected timeline provided, we anticipate that work should begin on the project late Summer 2015.
There were some delays in getting the project started, and the crews ran into difficulties during dredging. The project took longer than expected but was finally completed at the end of 2016. We extend our sincerest thanks to Governor Scott, all state and county agencies, and the contractors involved to make this project a success.
